The Romanian Alphabet

The Romanian language is based on the Latin script. The alphabet contains 31 letters, all of which are masculine. Some letters are new: ăĂ â îÎ şŞ ţŢ.

When spelling on the telephone, first names are usually used to identify the individual letters, e.g. Ana, Barbu, Constantin, etc.

Foreign words are used for the letters k, q, w, x, y, such as kilogram, quasar, xerox, watt, yen.

The following audio examples are spoken by a native Romanian speaker. Please listen to the letters and the example words.
